One February day, Brody, the emotional support dog of a woman named Debbie Campbell, escaped from their house in San Lorenzo. Her family made an exhaustive search for him, including posting on social media, but without success. Brody could not be found.
The family had almost given up hope when they received a phone call from Tijuana. At the other end was a man named Benjamin Gonzalez. He stated that Brody could be the dog they were looking for.
Debbie informed Gonzalez about her dog’s features and requested a photograph of it. She understood immediately that it was Brody.
Gonzalez stated that he purchased him in downtown Tijuana three weeks ago. He also stated that he was unaware that he was a stolen dog. He said further that he discovered a vendor on the street who was selling Brody for $2,000.
Gonzalez ultimately paid $1,000 to get the dog back. After Gonzalez’s family saw a Facebook post about Brody, the pieces of the puzzle began to fit together. He explained that everything made sense now that he saw how sad and miserable the dog was.
After receiving the call from Gonzales, Debbie’s son was already en route to San Diego. He successfully took Brody with him and returned to San Lorenzo. Campbell feels that Brody was stolen, however, it was unclear how the dog ended up in Mexico. What was important was that Brody was back with them and was safe and healthy.
They assumed that whoever stole him intended to sell the dog for a greater price. Because of their popularity and high value, French Bulldogs are the primary target of criminals. As was the case with Lady Gaga’s two French Bulldogs, which were stolen in Los Angeles.
Gonzalez was compensated for the price he paid for Brody, but he declined additional compensation from Campbell.
